Apply to be a LUMES peer writing tutor!
*LUMES WRITING TUTORS WANTED*
Do you like to write? Want to improve your writing, and help your fellow students do the same? Interested in contributing to teaching, and adding teaching experience to your CV?
Apply to become a LUMES Writing Tutor for fall 2019!
Tutors will receive training in good practice in academic writing (structure, organization, argumentation, language), and strategies for providing effective writing feedback, in two half-day workshops in May 2018, held by Ladaea Rylander from Lund University's Academic Support Centre.
Tutors will then provide feedback on the Pre-Course Assignments for a small group of new LUMES students, and lead the tutoring session when students arrive on campus.
You will be paid the standard student assistant rate (currently 154 SEK/hour) for your time in giving feedback and running the tutoring session (approximately 15 hours total, based on a standard calculation for time spent per student).
*Note that you must have a Swedish personnummer by September 2019 to be paid for tutoring. Otherwise volunteers are very welcome!
This is a great opportunity to further develop your own writing skills (useful for classes, your thesis, and Life Beyond LUMES), as well as contribute to the LUMES program.
In addition to being committed to improving writing, tutors must be:
1. Available to spend approximately 3 hours to prepare for, and then attend all writing workshop trainings:
Friday May 17, 13:15-17:00
Wednesday May 22, 09:15-12:00
2. Available to give feedback on approximately 4-6 short student essays in late August, and then a second round of feedback after revision in early September.
3. Available to attend and facilitate their Pre-Course Assignment tutoring session (currently scheduled during the first week of classes for Batch 2, i.e., the first week of September). Please note that the in-person session is mandatory; if you are selected as a tutor, we will rely on you to run a tutoring session.
To apply, please email to Kimberly.Nicholas [at] lucsus.lu.se
the following as ONE PDF FILE,
filename YourLastName-WritingTutor.pdf.
Deadline: 17:00 on Thursday, May 9.
1. A short cover letter (maximum one page) describing your motivation for the position and experience with writing.
2. An updated CV.
3. A short (ca. 2-4 page) sample of academic writing, focused on making a claim supported with evidence. Please reuse an existing paper you're happy with, rather than produce something new. Your final draft of your Pre-Course Assignment from last year would be suitable.
Thanks and happy writing!
